Newton S. Putnam was born in Pennsylvania around the year 1836. Newton entered the service when he was 28 years old, on December 19th, 1864 in Marysville, California. He served in the 8th California Infantry and was discharged in Fort Point, CA in 1866. He married Millie J. Putnam and had a brother named R.S. Putnam from Lendon, Michigan. At age 72, Newton was admitted to a U.S. National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers in Johnson City, Tennessee. He was transferred to the Battle Mountain Sanitarium later that year. Newton died of cardiac dilation at Battle Mountain in Hot Springs, South Dakota on June 2nd, 1912.
