Albert Knaak

Many graphic novelists were interested in the story of Albert Knaak, a veteran interred at Ft. Meade cemetery who was discovered to be a Medal of Honor recipient eighty-one years after his burial. After this discovery, the community led the campaign to have his accolade officially recognized, and this inspired multiple graphic novelists to explore this story further.

While one graphic novelist focused on the training accident that eventually led to Albert Knaak’s death, another focused on his entire military career. But both novelists were struck with the idea that such an honor had been somewhat lost to history, only to be discovered and emphasized by a passionate community.
