Charles Windolph

After surviving the Battle of the Little Bighorn and receiving the Medal of Honor, Charles Windolph moved to Lead, a local Black Hills community, where he worked for the Homestake Mine. The story of his immigration, his service, and his surprise receipt of the Purple Heart on his 95th birthday hooked our graphic novelist.

The novel focuses on this specific moment, when this elderly soldier and retired Homestake harness maker received an honor of highest accord, and joined with his previous Medal of Honor, expresses his pride in his adopted country.
